Brief description of Savitribai Phule Jayanti-

Significance:

The birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule is observed on 3rd January every year. She was the first woman school teacher and headmistress of India in the 19th century. She was also a social reformer and a poet. She is considered to be the pioneer of India’s feminist movement and played a vital role in improving women’s rights in India

A Brief About Savitribai Phule Life:

She was born on 3 January 1831 in the village of Naigaon in Satara District, Maharashtra being the youngest daughter of Lakshmi and Khandoji Nevase Patil. Savitribai got her primary education from Jyotirao Phule after her marriage.

Training Programmes:

She was fond of teaching because of this she enrolled herself in two teacher’s training programs, the first was at an institution run by an American missionary, Cynthia Farrar, in Ahmednagar. While the second was Ms. Mitchell’s School in Poona.

A Glimpse of Savitribai Phule’s Works :

After completing her teacher’s education, She started teaching girls at Poona, and within a short period, Savitribai and Jyotirao Phule along with Sagunabai started their school at Bhidewada.

In the 1850s, Savitribai and Jyotirao Phule established two educational trusts. The Native Male School, Pune, and the Society for Promoting the Education of Mahar, Mangs.

She published her first collection of poems Kavya Phule in 1854 emphasizing the importance of English and education. She wrote Bavan Kashi Subodh Ratnakar in 1892 and also wrote the poem “Go, Get Education” in which she encouraged those who are oppressed to free themselves by obtaining an education.

Savitribai’s Demise :

She died on 10th March 1897 at the age of 66 in Pune. Her legacy, however, continues to inspire us.
