It is a group of 35 islands presently as one island has been submerged under the sea and is well known for its beautiful beaches and amazing landscapes in the Arabian Sea. Lakshadweep in Malayalam and Sanskrit means ‘a hundred thousand islands’.

It is India’s smallest union territory consisting of 36 islands with an area of 32 sq km. It is comprised of 12 atolls, three reefs, five submerged banks and ten inhabited islands being a uni-district Union Territory. The capital of this island is Kavaratti while Andrott is the largest city of the UT. All Islands are situated at a distance of 220 to 440 km from Kochi, one of the major cities in Kerala and comes under the jurisdiction of Kerala High Court.

Lakshadweep has a tropical climate with an average temperature of 27° C – 32° C. April and May face the summer in the UT with an average temperature of 32° C. The climate is humid, warm and pleasant. The ideal time to visit this place is from October to March while June to October faces the South West Monsoon with an average rainfall of 10-40 mm.

The island of Agatti is connected through flights from Kochi and Bengaluru. Helicopter service is also available from Agatti to Kavaratti all round the year.

Spicejet to launch seaplane services soon for this island and will run from Kalpani to Minicoy, Kavaratti to Bitra, Kavaratti to Kadmat, Kavaratti to Kalpani, Kavaratti to Kiltan, Kochi to Bangaram, Kochi to Bitra and Kochi to Kalpani under UDAAN scheme.

Six ships connect Kochi, Kozhikode (Beypore) and Lakshadweep: MV Kavaratti, MV Amindivi, MV Minicoy, MV Arabian Sea, MV Lakshadweep Sea and MV Bharath Seema, while Boat/ferry service is available between islands.

Entry Permit:

Every person who is not a native of these Islands has to apply for a permit to visit this place. Government officials and armed Force Members, working/visiting these Islands along with their families are exempted from this requirement.

Foreign tourists having valid passports & visas for visiting India can visit Agatti, Kadmat & Bangaram Islands with permission of the Administration.

Following these factors, an Indian Navy base has been established in the union territory and  INS Dweeprakshak, was commissioned on Kavaratti island.
