What is the Super League?
The term “Super League” in football typically refers to proposals for a breakaway league composed of elite European football clubs. These proposals have generated controversy and discussions within the football community. The idea often involves a smaller, exclusive league featuring top clubs, separate from the existing domestic league structures and UEFA competitions. It has sparked debates about the potential impact on traditional football structures and the broader footballing community. As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, such plans faced significant opposition and were met with criticism from fans, governing bodies, and many within the football world. Please check the latest sources for any developments since then.
One line Court rule:
The court has ruled that it is illegal to block FIFA and UEFA from organizing the European Super League. The European Court of Justice (ECJ) also mentioned that FIFA and UEFA have abused their powers in this case.
Brief Description of the court’s rule:
The Super League authorities claimed FIFA and UEFA broke EU law by threatening to ban clubs and players from participating in the competition. A ruling by Europe’s highest court on Thursday also went against the governing bodies. However, the court said, “This does not mean that a competition like the Super League scheme must be sanctioned. “However, this judgment of the court is seen as a blow to the authority of FIFA and UEFA. The Super League was officially announced in April 2021 as a rival to the UEFA Champions League by the 12 clubs that initially joined it. But 9 clubs withdrew within 48 hours in the face of severe obstacles and strong criticism from supporters including FIFA and UEFA. Only Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus survive. Juventus also announced their intention to exit the competition last July. Soon after the Super League was announced, FIFA and UEFA threatened to take disciplinary action against the clubs involved. The league authorities initially resorted to the court to avoid an early ban against the Super League. Later, they applied to the European Court of Justice to smooth the way forward. That’s the verdict this time.
Football and fans have won’ – Real Madrid & Barcelona presidents Florentino Perez & Joan LaPorta celebrate new European Super League ruling.
What Happened?
The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Justice ruled against UEFA and FIFA, asserting that their opposition to the league breached EU law. The Super League, initially proposed in 2021 by top clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, and Chelsea, aimed to create a breakaway competition. However, it faced fan backlash, leading English clubs to withdraw before football authorities blocked the concept. However, the new verdict could see a new dawn of the Super League, and Florentino Perez, president of Real Madrid, remarked that this ruling marks a “before and after in the history of European football.
Statements:
WHAT FLORENTINO PEREZ SAID:
Perez said: “At Real Madrid, we welcome with great satisfaction the decision taken by the Court of Justice of the European Union, which is responsible for guaranteeing our principles, values and freedoms.
“In the coming days, we will carefully study the scope of this resolution, but I do anticipate two conclusions of great historical significance.

“First of all, that European club football is not and will never be a monopoly again. And secondly, from today the clubs will be the owners of their destiny. Clubs fully recognize our right to propose and promote European competitions that modernize our sport and attract fans from all over the world. In short, today the Europe of freedoms has triumphed again and today soccer and its fans have also triumphed.
“Faced with the pressures we have received for more than two years, law, reason, and freedom are imposed today. And for this reason, Real Madrid will continue to work for the sake of football.
WHAT JOAN LAPORTA SAID:
Barcelona also put out a statement after the verdict which read: “FC Barcelona wishes to express its satisfaction with the sentence of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) assessing the Super League project as proposed by A22 Sports. As one of the clubs driving the Super League project, FC Barcelona feels that the sentence paves the way for a new elite-level football competition in Europe by opposing the monopoly over the football world, and wishes to initiate new discussions as to the path that European competitions should take in the future.”
