About “Akash” – Air Defence System:

India now has developed its indigenously built Akash anti-air system.  The system has been designed and developed by the DRDO ( Defence Research Development Organization). It is a short-range surface-to-air missile system having 360° engagement capability. The range of operation varies from 4.5 km to 25 km with a range of altitude 100m to 20 km controlled by command guidance.  It can target helicopters, aircraft UAVs, etc. Equipped with an in-built power source it becomes fully automatic and possesses a secured mode of communication immune to active as well as passive jamming.

Significance of “Akash”:

In the exercise “Astrashakti”, this system demonstrated its importance by destroying four targets simultaneously making India the first country to develop such a weapon with so high precision by a single firing unit.

Geo-political Impact:

It has been officially confirmed that India, now has signed a deal of Rs. 6000 Cr for the export of the Akash air defence system to Armenia. Further countries like Brazil, and Egypt have also shown their interest in the system. India can extend its reach and act as a support for the countries in the Middle- East, Central Asia, South East Asia and Africa who face constant threats.

Conclusion:

With indigenously built weapons and through its exports India not only ensures better safety of its borders and strategic locations but also can get into the list of weapon supply countries reducing the dependencies on countries like the USA, Russia and China which in turn favourably boosts the economy of India.
