Glimpse of Personal Life:

Narayanan Vijayaraj Alagarswami popularly known as Vijayakanth was born on 25th August 1952, in Madurai. Born to N. Alagarswami and Aandal   Azhagarswami, tied the knot with Premalatha on 31st January 1990. He has two son Vijaya Prabhakaran and Shanmuga Pandian.

Brief of Acting Career:

He started his career in Tamil Cinema in 1979 and became the predominant actor in the industry. Vijayakanth did 154 movies proving the versatility of his work. In 1984, he became the Tamil actor to release the maximum number of movies in a year followed by acting in the first 3-D movie of the Tamil Industry “Annai Bhoomi” in 1985. He won several awards including the Filmfare Award South, Cinema Express Awards, and Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.

Summary of Vijayakanth’s Political Career:

Vijayakanth formed Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), the regional political party of Tamil Nadu based on Centre-left ideologies on 14th September 2005. Gaining 10% of the vote share in the state assembly elections in 2006, he became one of the influential leaders in the region within a year. In 2011, the former emerged as the leader of the opposition allying with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) winning 29 seats which was more than the seats won by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). In the 2014 parliament election, DMK formed an alliance with the BJP after the fallout with AIADMK. In the 2016 elections, his party suffered a defeat and he lost his seat finishing third in the contest.

Cause of Death:

Suffering from pneumonia, Vijayakanth was admitted to Miot Hospital in Chennai and was treated under ventilation and also tested positive for COVID-19. The reports from the officials of the hospital confirmed his death on the morning of 28th December 2023. He died at the age of 71.
