AR Rahman was born in a Hindu family and was named Dilip. Then at the age of 23, Rahman accepted Islam and changed his name to ‘Allah Rakha Rahman’ i.e. AR Rahman. He did this after meeting one of his gurus, Qadri Islam.

A.R. Rahman is one such musician, who is enough to make any film a blockbuster with his music. AR Rahman has left a different impression on the hearts of the audience with his songs in films. He has given music to films like ‘Roja’, ‘Bombay’, ‘Taal’, ‘Jodha Akbar’, ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Swades’, ‘Rockstar’.In his career, AR Rahman gave songs for many films, most of which proved to be hits. AR Rahman started his journey as a music composer with Mani Ratnam’s film Roja. In this film, Mani Ratnam chose Rahman instead of veteran musician Ilaiyaraaja. Rehman was given a fee of Rs 25,000 for Roza. He also won the National Award for his very first film.

Achievements:

  1. There is a street in the name of Rahman A street in Markham (Ontario, Canada) is named after Rahman. This street has been named ‘Allah Rakha Rahman Street’ and was inaugurated in the year 2017.
  2. He Won the National Award six times Rahman has won the National Award for his music six times. Of these, five are for Best Music Direction and one for Best Background Score. The first award was won for Roja in 1992, the second for Tamil film Meensara Kanavu in 1996, the third for Lagaan in 2001, the fourth for Tamil film Kannathil Muthamittal in 2002 and the fifth award for Tamil film Kaatru Veliyidai in 2017. In 2017, he also won the National Award in the Best Background Score category for the Hindi film Mom.
  3. Won two Oscars Rahman received 2 Oscars in the same year for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Apart from Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman has also composed music for Hollywood films ‘127 Hours’ and ‘Lord of War’.
