Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi were fighting for the 2023 FIFA Best Player of the Year award. Both scored 48 points. Nevertheless, Messi was named as the best footballer of the year. Sunil Chhetri and Igor Stimach voted from India. But none of them voted for Messi.

There Chhetri voted for Haaland, Rodri and Victor Osimhen. Stimac voted for Rodri, Julian Alvarez and Kevin De Bruyne. A journalist from India also voted. He also did not vote for Messi.
